DLBC lists four assisted living licenses in Tooele County (three in Tooele, one in Grantsville; two with secure memory care beds, 27 secure beds in all) and one nursing care facility. Tooele County's 65+ population grew about 27% from 2020 to 2025. Tooele County Aging Services (435-277-2420) runs the local aging programs.
A small market with fast growth
Tooele County sits west of the Oquirrh Mountains, a drive of roughly 35 to 45 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. Census Bureau estimates count 8,802 residents 65 and older in the county on July 1, 2025, up from 6,952 in mid-2020, an increase of about 27% in five years. The county's overall population rose to about 87,500 over the same period.
Growth in the older population has not been matched by new licensed care. Utah's licensing records show a short list of options, and Tooele families often end up comparing them with facilities in West Valley City, Kearns or Magna on the other side of the mountains.

None of the four assisted living licenses had findings in DLBC's current 36-month public record when we pulled it; the nursing care facility had two state findings. Memory care in Tooele
Two Tooele licenses have secure beds, 27 in total. For a county with nearly 9,000 residents 65 and older, that is a small supply, and openings can be scarce. Families who need a secure unit quickly often widen the search to the Salt Lake Valley, where DLBC lists more than 1,100 secure beds.
Utah's rules are the same on both sides of the mountains: a secure unit must be part of a Type II license, residents must be able to exit with one person's limited help, and at least one direct-care staff member must be inside the unit at all times.
Hospitals and home care
Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele is the county's state-licensed acute care hospital. Larger hospitals in Salt Lake City and West Valley City are a significant drive, which matters for specialist care and for families deciding where a parent with complex medical needs should live.
Only one personal care agency lists a Tooele address on DLBC's records, but agencies licensed elsewhere in Utah may serve Tooele County. Ask any agency about travel fees and minimum shifts before signing.
Local help in Tooele County
Tooele County Health Department's Aging Services runs the Area Agency on Aging programs for the county at 435-277-2420, including Medicare counseling through SHIP, the Senior Medicare Patrol and dementia caregiver support groups. Tooele's long-term care ombudsman line is 435-277-2350.
Aging Waiver intake for Medicaid-eligible residents 65 and older who need nursing-facility-level care also runs through the local aging agency. The waiver has a waiting list, so apply early.
Paying for care in Tooele County
Costs follow the same statewide benchmarks as the rest of Utah: CareScout's 2025 Utah median is about $5,233 a month for assisted living and about $8,669 a month for a semi-private nursing home room. No Tooele-specific figure is published. The same payment programs apply too: Medicare for short skilled stays, home health and hospice; Utah Medicaid for long-term nursing care; and the New Choices Waiver for services in assisted living for eligible people who have lived in a licensed facility for a year or more.
Because the local supply is small, ask each Tooele facility early whether it accepts New Choices residents and how many.
When to look east
Widen the search when you need a secure unit and none is open, when a parent needs a Type II building and the local ones are full, or when the family member who will visit most lives in the Salt Lake Valley. Our assisted living directory lets you filter by city across both counties.
