Looking beyond Salt Lake County

Families often widen the search north to Davis County, south to Utah County or west to Tooele. Here is what changes and what does not.

Quick answer

Yes. Assisted living, nursing care facilities, home health, hospice and personal care agencies are licensed by Utah's DLBC under the same rules statewide, so a Type II license in Bountiful or Provo means the same thing as one in Sandy.

Do the same rules apply in Davis and Utah counties?

Yes. Assisted living, nursing care facilities, home health, hospice and personal care agencies are licensed by Utah's DLBC under the same rules statewide, so a Type II license in Bountiful or Provo means the same thing as one in Sandy.

What changes is the local layer: each county is served by its own Area Agency on Aging and ombudsman program, so Aging Waiver intake, Meals on Wheels and caregiver support run through a different office. The state Division of Aging and Adult Services lists the local agencies.

How do Davis and Utah counties compare with Salt Lake County for seniors?

Census Bureau estimates for July 1, 2025 count 158,727 residents 65 and older in Salt Lake County (13.0%), 47,019 in Davis County (12.3%), 67,099 in Utah County (8.8%) and 8,802 in Tooele County (10.1%).

We cover Salt Lake and Tooele counties in depth. For Davis and Utah counties we do not publish facility listings; use DLBC's search to check any license there, and the same questions in our guides apply.

What does Tooele County offer?

Tooele County has a smaller set of licensed options: DLBC lists 4 assisted living licenses (172 beds), 1 nursing care facility and 1 home care, home health or hospice license with Tooele County addresses, plus Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele.

Tooele County Aging Services (435-277-2420) runs the local Area Agency on Aging programs, including Medicare counseling and dementia caregiver support groups. See our Tooele and Grantsville pages.

Should we widen the search to another county?

Widen the search when the right license type, a secure unit, or a facility that accepts the New Choices Waiver is not available near family, or when a sibling in another county will be the main visitor.

Travel time on I-15 at rush hour is real; a facility 20 minutes from the person who visits most often is usually better than a nicer one an hour away.

How do we check a facility in Davis or Utah County?

Use DLBC's public Find a facility search, which covers every licensed facility in Utah, to confirm the license type, capacity, expiration date and 36 months of inspection findings, and check CMS Care Compare for nursing homes.

The same questions in our guides apply: Type I or Type II, secure beds, New Choices Waiver participation, and the written discharge criteria.
